Motorbike licence plate holder: The solution for your licence plate

Every vehicle owner is obliged to attach a licence plate to a motorbike. Many motorbikes already have a licence plate holder as standard. However, the standard motorbike licence plate holders are not really an eye-catcher. They tend to spoil the sporty look of many motorbikes and are one of the parts on the motorbike that bikers like to replace.

What you need to consider with a motorbike licence plate holder

Basically, you can choose whether you want to mount your motorbike licence plate holder at the rear in the middle or on the side. However, please note that the licence plate must be legible from both sides. An observer standing 30 degrees to the side behind the motorbike must be able to read the number plate. The lower edge of your licence plate must be at least 300 mm above the ground. At the same time, the upper edge must not be more than 1200 mm above the ground. To guarantee legibility, the licence plate may be inclined by up to 30 degrees.

Please also note that licence plate illumination is required by law. We therefore recommend that you fit a licence plate holder with integrated licence plate lighting to your motorbike. The ECE number of the licence plate light is important, otherwise it is not permitted on the road. You can often fit the motorbike licence plate holder without drilling. To do this, simply unscrew the old motorbike licence plate holder and use the existing holes. Combine your licence plate holder with indicators, for example, to avoid drilling additional holes for the indicators.

Side or rear: Where is the licence plate holder attached to the motorbike?

Where exactly you attach your licence plate holder is a matter of taste. However, there are a few factors that you should consider before making your decision. This applies, for example, to saddlebags, luggage rolls and wheel covers. You may not be able to attach these if you have a side motorbike licence plate holder. If you still prefer a side-mounted motorbike licence plate holder, there are a few regulations that you must observe. A side-mounted motorbike licence plate holder is only permitted with a test report or a partial certificate. If this is not available, an assessment must be carried out by the TÜV. Also pay attention to the visibility and angle of the licence plate holder on the motorbike. The holder must not protrude beyond the contours of the motorbike.

Are short licence plate holders permitted on motorbikes?

Short motorbike licence plate holders are permitted as long as the requirements of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations are met. In addition to legibility, you should also pay attention to the size. A motorbike licence plate has a minimum width of 180 mm and a maximum width of 220 mm. The height of the licence plate must be 200 mm. The motorbike licence plate holder must therefore be able to support this size.

Customise your bike with a new number plate holder

Many motorcyclists want to give their bike a personalised look. Components such as mirrors, levers and the panelling are replaced. The standard motorbike number plate holder is also often replaced with a shorter or sportier one. Licence plate holders for motorbikes must be particularly robust and durable. Once the perfect licence plate holder has been attached to the bike, it is sometimes not replaced for years. This makes the quality of the holder all the more important. Factors such as correct installation and the material play an important role here. We therefore recommend a motorbike number plate holder that is powder-coated.
