Do motorbike headlights have to have an E-test?

What is an ECE test number?

In the EU, there are components that may not be fitted without an ECE test number. These include, for example, exhaust systems, lighting and mirrors. The ECE test number indicates that the component complies with EU safety standards and is therefore authorised for road use. If a component does not have an ECE test number, you must be able to present either an ABE or a parts certificate.

Do auxiliary headlights on motorbikes have to be registered?

In principle, you do not have to register your auxiliary headlights on your motorbike. However, the auxiliary headlamp must have an E-mark. Please also note that there are legal requirements for the number of auxiliary headlights on the motorbike. A maximum of two low beam headlights, two high beam headlights and two fog lights may be fitted to a motorbike.

What kind of motorbike headlights are there?

There are two different types of motorbike headlights. Halogen headlights are an older technology that is still in use. Halogen headlights are still fitted as standard in many vehicles due to their favourable price and ease of installation. Compared to halogen headlights, LED headlights for motorbikes have the advantage of significantly higher luminosity. This means you are not only seen much better on the road, but also have better visibility. Due to the more robust nature of LED headlights, they also have a longer service life than halogen headlights.
